What is the ACT?

The ACT is an achievement test, measuring what a student has learned in school. The SAT is more of an aptitude test, testing reasoning and verbal abilities. The ACT has up to 5 components: English, Mathematics, Reading, Science, and an optional Writing Test. The test is scored from 1-36. Almost every college requires an ACT or SAT for admission.

When should I take the ACT? As early as the 9th grade! You can take the ACT as many times you want. Dare County offers a free ACT test for all juniors.

How much does the test cost?

How much does it cost to take the ACT? The ACT costs $29.00 + $14.00 (optional writing test) + $19.00 (if registered late). There are also fee waivers. More information here.

 

Should I sign up for the optional writing test?

Yes. Optional almost never means optional when it comes to college admissions material.

What is an ACT Composite Score?

The ACT consists of four tests: English, mathematics, reading, and science. The score range for each of the four tests is 1–36. The composite score, as reported by ACT, is the average of the four test scores earned during a single test administration, rounded to the nearest whole number.
